Colon Cancer Screening & Prevention at Central Valley Medical Center

Protect Your Health with Preventive Screening

A colonoscopy is one of the most effective tools available for preventing and detecting colorectal cancer. During a colonoscopy, your provider examines the lining of the colon and rectum using a thin, flexible camera. This allows abnormalities such as polyps to be found and removed before they have the opportunity to develop into cancer.

At Central Valley Medical Center, our experienced team provides high-quality colonoscopy services in a comfortable, supportive environment close to home.

Most adults should begin routine colorectal cancer screening at age 45. If you have a family history of colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or other risk factors, your provider may recommend screening earlier.

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows your provider to view the inside of your large intestine (colon) and rectum.

During the procedure, a small camera attached to a flexible tube is gently guided through the colon. This allows your provider to:

  • Detect and remove colon polyps
  • Identify sources of bleeding
  • Evaluate changes in bowel habits
  • Investigate abdominal pain or unexplained symptoms
  • Screen for colorectal cancer
  • Monitor patients with a history of polyps or colon disease

Most patients are sedated during the procedure and experience little to no discomfort.

Why is Colon Cancer Screening Important?

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the United States, but it is also one of the most preventable.

A colonoscopy can help:

  • Detect cancer early when treatment is most effective
  • Find and remove precancerous polyps
  • Reduce your risk of developing colorectal cancer
  • Provide peace of mind about your digestive health

Because polyps often cause no symptoms, screening is important even if you feel healthy.

Who Should Get a Colonoscopy?

You may benefit from a colonoscopy if you:

  • Are 45 years of age or older
  • Have a family history of colon cancer or colon polyps
  • Have a personal history of colon polyps
  • Experience changes in bowel habits
  • Have unexplained abdominal pain
  • Notice blood in your stool
  • Have unexplained weight loss
  • Have certain digestive conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease

Talk with your provider about the screening schedule that is right for you.
