About Emily
Dr. Magallanes grew up with aspirations of changing the world. Her childhood was full of documentaries about new advances in the treatment of HIV and surgeries for women experiencing the effects of obstructed labor in rural Africa. In high school, Dr. Magallanes and her mother discovered the compelling evidence for whole food plant based diets and made the transition to a healthier eating pattern. After seeing the benefits for herself and her family, she realized the importance of nutrition for improving health in every phase of life.
Dr. Magallanes eventually went to BYU where she studied Public Health and Nonprofit Management thinking of starting a health-centric nonprofit organization. As part of her undergraduate program she completed an international research project in East London, South Africa where she interviewed HIV-positive women about the challenges of getting adequate nutrition. This was one of the many experiences that emphasized to her the importance of treating patients holistically and with dignity.
After returning home from a full time LDS mission in Texas, Dr. Magallanes realized her goals were better suited to a career in medicine. She was accepted to UT Southwestern Medical Center and moved with her husband to Dallas, TX to continue her education. During medical school she led research projects geared toward teaching nutrition to medical students. She also had two children and experienced first hand the challenges of pregnancy, breastfeeding and parenting on top of a demanding schedule.
Broad interests in lifestyle medicine, surgery, obstetrics and pediatric care in addition to a strong belief in the importance of primary care physicians led Dr. Magallanes to pursue residency training in family medicine. She felt privileged to train at John Peter Smith Hospital, one of the leading programs in the country. While there she completed a fellowship in surgical obstetrics as well as additional training in lifestyle medicine, gynecology, street medicine and refugee health.
At the conclusion of residency training Dr. Magallanes moved to Utah with her growing family for the benefit of being closer to grandparents and mountains. She is passionate about women’s healthcare, food as medicine and treating patients with a cooperative and comprehensive approach. Her goal is to improve the CVMC community one patient encounter at a time.
